El Salvador is very much known for its very high crime rates. Another thing El Salvador is known for is La Mara Salvatrucha, which is a very large gang in the country. For this reason many of the homes are either gated of have a security guard. Another very popular thing you will find on homes over there are metal bars over the windows, so that nobody can break in that easily.
I use to think it was weird because it takes away from the beauty of the homes. I eventually got use to seeing those bars on the windows, and it became a norm. Having security guards or extra protection has become a part of the culture in El Salvador. It’s sad that you can’t walk around at night like in many neighborhoods in the United States.
